Understand iCloud and local saving

See what syncs, what stays local and how offline use differs from downloading a cloud copy.

Development edition guide. Updated 13 October 2026.

What belongs where

Clips stay on the device where you save them. Notes and explicitly selected file copies can use your private iCloud account. ExplorePaste email sign-in does not move shelf content to its account service.

Choose iCloud in the app

  1. Open the iCloud control on Mac, or Settings on iPhone and iPad.
  2. Choose Continue with iCloud or Keep on this device when prompted.
  3. Use Sync notes and selected files to control transfers, and Sync Now to request a refresh.
Switching sync off pauses transfers. Copies already in iCloud remain there. It is not a cloud deletion command.

Work offline

You can continue using local clips, notes and downloaded copies without email sign-in. Pending transfers wait for iCloud to become available. A file that has not been downloaded is not available offline.

Read the sync status. Saved locally, waiting for iCloud means the local work is saved but its transfer has not finished.

Before switching Apple accounts or devices

Keep an independent copy of important material and finish pending transfers before changing Apple accounts. If an item is missing, contact support with the device and app version, without sending private content.
