Keep a file copy without changing the original

Import a managed copy, preview or share it, and choose whether that copy belongs in iCloud.

Development edition guide. Updated 13 October 2026.

Add a file

  1. Open Files and choose Add Files, then select a file you may copy.
  2. ExplorePaste saves a managed copy in its own storage. The source stays where it was.
  3. You can also use the mobile Share extension or a supported drag and drop. A dropped copy starts on this device.
Edits to the original do not automatically update the shelf copy. Import it again when you need a new copy.

Preview and share

  1. Select the saved file to open its details.
  2. Choose Preview Copy for the native preview of a supported file.
  3. Use Share, or Open Copy where available, to send the copy to another app.

Choose which copies sync

Use Sync this copy on a device-only copy when iCloud is available. Only explicitly selected copies are queued for your private iCloud account. Check the visible status and wait for a transfer to finish.

A copy available only in iCloud must be downloaded before you can open it offline. If the app reports a missing or unavailable copy, reconnect and check its sync status rather than assuming it is on the device.

Remove or restore a copy

Remove Copy moves the managed copy to Recently Deleted. Restore it there within 30 days. Permanent removal deletes that managed copy, not the original source file.
